AstaroTheatro October and November 2017

Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October, 20:30
Sunday 16 October, 16:30
QUANDO, QUANDO?
AstaroTheatro hosts La Ribalta Teatro
From Pisa Italy to Amsterdam The Netherlands
a multilingual show written, directed and performed by A. Ierardi and G. Vierda
produced by La Ribalta Teatro-The Thing

The scene opens with two men united by a common and unique destiny: staging ”Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett. Confused by a confusing play, the two improvised actors approach the script with the same naiveté of two clowns playing a Greek tragedy: in the wrong place at the wrong time, but with the certainty to be in the right place at the right time.

Their big dream is to play it at Théâtre de Babylone in Paris, near the legendary Quartier Latin, where it was historically staged/played for the first time. With few resources, they prepare themselves, making their best efforts to fulfil their wish. They rehearse for days, months, years, with obstinacy and naiveté, making mistakes (a lot) and learning (a little), until the magical day: the time of their debut has come at last, however they haven’t understood anything about it. They stop playing, they get confused, they get lost in the complexity of the text that they do not yet manage to control.
Quando, Quando? is a tragicomic journey of two blunderers playing with their dreams and their fears by comparing themselves with the theatrical pair par excellence: Vladimir and Estragon.
Alberto Ierardi and Giorgio Vierda carry on their research about the meaning of the theatrical pair, that, through the staging of Quando, Quando?, is augmented through the language element: the play is indeed written in a mix of languages. By taking advantage of the inherent multilingualism of Waiting for Godot text (Beckett initially writes it in French and later on he re-translates it into English), on the stage the actors play their characters by using the following three languages: English, French and Italian, hence creating a musical score.
The challenge to create a real European grammelot intends to be an expedient to actively reflect on the use of language in our daily life and on how the same may serve, according to its declinations, as a common ground or as a source of conflict with other cultures.

LA RIBALTA TEATRO
La Ribalta Teatro is an Italian Company, formed by a duo, Alberto Ierardi and Giorgio Vierda, both graduated at Nico Pepe Academy in Udine. Winner of many prices in Italy, La Ribalta Teatro is giving now the birth to its fresh European Tour with Quando, Quando? It works in Pisa at the “Teatro Lux”, where it is based. At “Teatro Lux” it creates its shows and gives many workshops for the citizens.

James Oesi at AstaroTheatro

“A sensitive and knowlegdeable musician who has much to share and a very natural and confident performer.” Gary Karr, world renown bass soloist
“If you have a man like James Oesi, then you know it’s there, it sounds good, and the bass is a solo instrument.” Hans Haffmans, host of Dutch NPO Radio 4

“Here was a young musician of uncommon intelligence and insight, clearly destined, given the right encouragement, to contribute to the world of music not only as a player but a creative force.” Geoffrey Simon, acclaimed conductor and record producer

Since his arrival in The Netherlands in 2009, double bassist James Oesi has become a well known face in the classical and contemporary music world. As one of the few concentrating on the bass as a solo instrument, he has performed solo programmes (including works by Bach, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff, among others) in prominent venues such as Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Utrecht’s TivoliVredenburg, The Oosterpoort in Groningen, Bach Festival Dordrecht, CrossLinx Festival and at festival Wonderfeel (where his concert was later named by Dutch National Public Radio 4 as one of the festival’s highlights).

She Owl at AstaroTheatro

ABOUT SHE OWL’S MUSIC

It’s getting harder and harder to lock She Owl in a specific genre-cage. Up till now the duo has been experimenting with dream folk in their first full-length ‘She Owl’ (2013), then with psychedelic tribal anthems in the following record ‘Animal Eye’ (2015).
Described as “an emotional journey on David Lynch’s Lost Highway, with Bat for Lashes and P.J. Harvey on the front seats”, She Owl’s “Drifters Ep” gathers powerful soundscapes and haunting ballads with a dream-pop texture, sealed and delivered by Bay Area producer George S. Rosenthal.
The EP is a soundtrack for Jolanda’s surreal dream about war and deliverance. The music of She Owl gets more majestic and punchy at once, pouring out the duo’s nomadic soul, with adventurous vocals and instrumental harmonizations. The lyrics are a definitive statement about the times we’re in: if “the war within is the war outside”, we can face our fears and joys, and we can stop pretending we are not responsible.

Molly Heady-Carroll is deeply interested in animals (reptiles in particular) and has dedicated herself to not only studying them through drawing, but also capturing their behaviour and personality through her work. Every week, Molly visits zoos, museums and farms to draw animals from life.

This exhibition showcases a selection of her animal art created over the past year. This show is also launching her new book Wekelijkse Dierentuin Tekeningen (Weekly Zoo Drawings).
When she isn’t drawing animals from life, Molly is inventing her own animals as a creature designer for games and animation. She currently lives in Bussum with her two leopard geckos, Spot & Dot, Poppy the tarantula, Laura the cat and (her favorite pet) Erik the boyfriend 😛

by Bilgesu Erenus

The Answers Inside Questions
“Why cannot Themis, the Goddess of Justice, feel safe with her Sword, her Blindfold and her Scale? Why is there blood on her Sword?
Does her Blindfold, the symbol of her neutrality, represent the indifference of today, or the addiction to Capitalism?
Can her Scale, the symbol of the fair distribution of justice, be sustained in the current global capitalist conditions?
Is she content that she has already lost her pedestal of the Goddess of Justice to the criminologist Lombroso, the inventor of innate criminal theory?
Does the belief of both Themis and Lombroso that the salvation of all humanity can only take place when the notion of Justice reaches the level of Social Justice, stem from truth or desperation?”

Strange Stories from Nowhere
Storytelling by Joaquim Pedro Ferreira

These are the Strange Stories from Nowhere.

New strange stories from Old Decrepit Ports.
Crooked stories aching to be told.
Stories of old circus, lost forests, hidden plazas, strange creatures.
These stories from everywhere are now merged into a possible archetype of the Story and now they are from nowhere.
The Stories from Nowhere.
But these are the weird ones.
Told in secret.
In whispers.
And for you they come for free.
Unless you decide to have a beer or two…

“Why have I returned? to clear my name!”

AstaroTheatro presents a monologue by Howard Zinn adapted and performed by Roberto Bacchilega
Karl Marx has had enough of seeing his revolutionary ideas taken over by opportunists who, time and again, organize a new priesthood and hierarchy complete with excommunications and indexes, inquisitions and firing squads. He is disgusted by media declaring him dead again and again. Karl Marx is back to remind us that his ideas are more alive than ever. He revisits memories of his courageous life and revolutionary theories. We learn about his family, his struggles and the boils on his arse.
Marx is Back is the opening of a themed evening with open discussion. ‘How far capitalism has gone, nowadays. Ideas for resistance and the meaning of revolution in our times.’

at HTIB 1e Weteringsplantsoen 2 C AMSTERDAM

The members of Alli Mana / Poetry Performance & Theatre
found each other in their love for the power of the words in performance.

In the first production of the Alli Mana theatre company, ten performers share their stories on stage.
In ”Alli Mana Pa K’ Eho” (I Do Not Have Another Mother) in contact with poetry, commemoration and the art of forgetting, ten people (compirsing actors and actresses, play writers, musicans and poets)
set a multi-language performance exploring and questioning the boundaries of time, the need of belonging, the beauty of sung and spoken words
– all inspired and driven by a common mission:
to build a bridge.

“Man resembles the place he lives in
Resembles its water, its soil

He resembles its sky in that his tears are blue
The sea in that his glances are rough
Houses, streets and corners
How much he resembles
And the dooryards
(His heart squeezed with a well curb)
And its words”
