AstaroTheatro and Free Fringe Festival 2015

Thursday 3rd September
EXHIBITION OPENING: 19:00
‘Albert Oink’ paintings by Zbigniew Maciak
Albert Oink is the pseudonym of Zbigniew Maciak, a Polish artist with a theatre background living in Amsterdam. His career started with drawing cartoons for a Polish theatrical weekly. He gradually switched from paper and ink to canvas and oil paint. For several years he portrayed mostly pigs and occasionally other animals. The hybrid forms presented in this exhibition mark a new stage in the development of his style which a Polish art critic described as “fallen aesthetics”

BOUFFON DOUBLE BILL: from 20:00
‘Feic’ by Ciara O’Sullivan
My piece involves a type of clowning called Bouffon. Bouffon is a way of attacking a social issue by being a clown and making fun of it. Feic is an Irish verb to see. We all see things, objects, people differently. The piece involves a box , a doll and a Bouffon who combines a mock Irish nun with an image of me. There will be audience interaction and strong language. Be prepared to look at things differently!

‘The Dictation of Life’ by Rhys McLellan
I have a problem with life at the minute. It’s a problem that seems to be worldwide, The Dictation of Life by the technology with which we surround ourselves. Be it a console, even something as simple as a car or these so called ‘android’ phones, they have an unshakable hold on us. They allow us to become more internally connected with each other but at the same time we are distancing ourselves, not just from each other but the world

Monday 7th September
THE LAND BETWEEN (Documentary Film): 20:00
THE LAND BETWEEN offers an insight into the hidden and desperate lives of Sub-Saharan African migrants living in the mountains of northern Morocco. For most, their dream is to enter Europe by jumping a highly-militarised barrier into Melilla, a Spanish enclave on the African continent. With unique and unprecedented access, this film intimately documents the everyday life of these migrants trapped in limbo, as well as the extreme violence and constant mistreatment they face from both the Moroccan and Spanish authorities. It also explores many universal questions; including how and why people are prepared to risk everything, including their life, to leave their country, their family and friends, in search of a new and better life

Friday 11th September
DOUBLE BILL: from 20:00
Oranges and Olive Pits
a storytelling of the Spanish Revolution with Dolan Jones and Sam Morris
As Spain erupts in civil war and revolution, two brothers tell each other stories to help explain the changing world around them. Their mythologies swiftly unravel, and when the civil war within the anti-fascist resistance tears them apart, they risk facing each other across the barricades

The Journal by BetweenTwoHands
The Journal is a miniature object theatre performance with a tiny stage of 40 centimeters wide by 30 centimeters deep. Appropriately, this performance will take place at AstaroTheatro, Amsterdam’s Smallest Theatre! Tjin A Ton and Gosia Kazcmarek carefully manipulate dolls, odds and ends, music, torches and shadows to present the reflections of a lonesome man living in a world where objects are taking over

Saturday 12th September
ASTAROTHEATRO DOUBLE BILL: from 20:30

Songs and poems from the sea, from the earth and from the heart composed by Tora Mudadu and Fabio Marziali. The result is a delightful combination of original mediterranean folk music, jazz and spoken word performed in Italian, Sardinian and English

Radical Friends (Feature Doc – 79min)
Questioning climate politics and exploring climate activism
By environment activst Chihiro Geuzebroek
Language: Spanish English (English subtitles)
Environmental roadmovie + grassroot movement = moviement of friendship! Radical friends focus is in raising people who dare to be friendly enough to contribute to a world where good life comes first and money&greed comes last.
REVIEWS: “Amongst all the documentaries dealing with environmental activism, director Chihiro Geuzebroek has hit upon a winning formula to detail something that’s so often rendered with the sledgehammer of didacticism. First of all, she’s the subject of the film, a personal journey undertaken by a cute, plucky “little Dutch girl” (of Bolivian heritage) which, frankly, goes a long way to rendering a picture that’s not merely palatable, but includes a wealth of information in an agreeable, entertaining fashion.” (Greg Klymkiw) REVIEW FILM CORNER [CANADA]
“Radical Friends could easily have been a self-indulgent work were it not for Geuzebroek’s extreme earnestness and deep respect for Bolivia’s culture and its activists. With the help of endearing animations and a relaxed interview style, the filmmaker has created a unique film that is both informative and emotional.” (Elena Lowe) REVIEW DORKSHELF [CANADA]

The world has many sounds and the body has many voices.
How can we find the connection between what we receive from the outside and what we wish to express from the inside?
Our bodies explore the surrounding space scanning its potentialities.
Just like the body, our voice has memories too.
In this workshop we will share strategies and tricks to trigger our voice into exploring its depths, its peaks and routes of expression.
We will measure our renewed vocal strength against texts of our choice and match our expression to the texture of the written words.

Small Planet Documentaries at AstaroTheatro

AstaroTheatro presents 2 documentaries by Yorgos Avgeropoulos (Small Planet). Two different movies with different stories, both sharing a fundamental issue: our personal conscience and our collective conscience. The documentaries have been generously given free of charge by Small Planet Productions for screening in AstaroTheatro. We are very thankful. A special thanks to Haris Lamprou. AstaroTheatro aims at creating community and awareness.

Saturday 10 January at 20.30
El Sistema (saving lives)
A film by Yorgos Avgeropoulos (Small Planet Productions)
AstaroTheatro Sint Jansstraat 37 Amsterdam

One afternoon in 1975 in a garage in Caracas, Venezuela, the music professor and economist José Antonio Abreu began a crusade that seemed completely utopian. He wanted to save as many children as possible from poverty, the streets and criminality by teaching them free of charge classical music and making them members of a Classical symphony orchestra. Only 11 children came to the first rehearsal. But the seed has already been planted in the grounded, giving birth to what would later become known as El Sistema. An education system and at the same time a weapon against poverty. A tool for social change. An attempt to change the world through music. “Poverty is not only the lack of food and shelter. Poverty is to feel like you are nobody and to be deprived of an identity. It is abandonment and anonymity. Once a child receives its own instrument, it stops being poor. A child with a violin is not poor” “The culture for the poor cannot be a poor culture” Free entrance. Open debate after the film.

Saturday 17 January at 20.30 h.
Cassandra’s Treasure (Golden Times)
A film by Yorgos Avgeropoulos (Small Planet Productions)
AstaroTheatro Sint Jansstraat 37 Amsterdam

The rights and the dignity of the people in Khalkidhiki, Greece, have been brutally suppressed by the riot police during their protest against the opening of a giant open sky gold and copper mine in the region. Huge interests, billions of Euros are playing a major role in this matter: foreign investments, exploitation, political interests, the workers and the local economy. All this happens with the ghost of the Greek economical crisis in the background. In the battle for precious minerals in Khalkidhiki the only sure loser is the environment.  Free entrance. Open debate after the film.
