QUANDO, QUANDO?
AstaroTheatro hosts La Ribalta Teatro
From Pisa Italy to Amsterdam The Netherlands
a multilingual show written, directed and performed by A. Ierardi and G. Vierda
produced by La Ribalta Teatro-The Thing
La_Ribalta-5
The scene opens with two men united by a common and unique destiny: staging ”Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett. Confused by a confusing play, the two improvised actors approach the script with the same naiveté of two clowns playing a Greek tragedy: in the wrong place at the wrong time, but with the certainty to be in the right place at the right time.
Their big dream is to play it at Théâtre de Babylone in Paris, near the legendary Quartier Latin, where it was historically staged/played for the first time. With few resources, they prepare themselves, making their best efforts to fulfil their wish. They rehearse for days, months, years, with obstinacy and naiveté, making mistakes (a lot) and learning (a little), until the magical day: the time of their debut has come at last, however they haven’t understood anything about it. They stop playing, they get confused, they get lost in the complexity of the text that they do not yet manage to control.
Quando, Quando? is a tragicomic journey of two blunderers playing with their dreams and their fears by comparing themselves with the theatrical pair par excellence: Vladimir and Estragon.
Alberto Ierardi and Giorgio Vierda carry on their research about the meaning of the theatrical pair, that, through the staging of Quando, Quando?, is augmented through the language element: the play is indeed written in a mix of languages. By taking advantage of the inherent multilingualism of Waiting for Godot text (Beckett initially writes it in French and later on he re-translates it into English), on the stage the actors play their characters by using the following three languages: English, French and Italian, hence creating a musical score.
The challenge to create a real European grammelot intends to be an expedient to actively reflect on the use of language in our daily life and on how the same may serve, according to its declinations, as a common ground or as a source of conflict with other cultures.
LA RIBALTA TEATRO
La Ribalta Teatro is an Italian Company, formed by a duo, Alberto Ierardi and Giorgio Vierda, both graduated at Nico Pepe Academy in Udine. Winner of many prices in Italy, La Ribalta Teatro is giving now the birth to its fresh European Tour with Quando, Quando? It works in Pisa at the “Teatro Lux”, where it is based. At “Teatro Lux” it creates its shows and gives many workshops for the citizens.

James Oesi at AstaroTheatro
oesi@s.xanthoulis245
“A sensitive and knowlegdeable musician who has much to share and a very natural and confident performer.” Gary Karr, world renown bass soloist
“If you have a man like James Oesi, then you know it’s there, it sounds good, and the bass is a solo instrument.” Hans Haffmans, host of Dutch NPO Radio 4

“Here was a young musician of uncommon intelligence and insight, clearly destined, given the right encouragement, to contribute to the world of music not only as a player but a creative force.” Geoffrey Simon, acclaimed conductor and record producer

Since his arrival in The Netherlands in 2009, double bassist James Oesi has become a well known face in the classical and contemporary music world. As one of the few concentrating on the bass as a solo instrument, he has performed solo programmes (including works by Bach, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff, among others) in prominent venues such as Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Utrecht’s TivoliVredenburg, The Oosterpoort in Groningen, Bach Festival Dordrecht, CrossLinx Festival and at festival Wonderfeel (where his concert was later named by Dutch National Public Radio 4 as one of the festival’s highlights).

She Owl at AstaroTheatro
She Owl
ABOUT SHE OWL’S MUSIC

It’s getting harder and harder to lock She Owl in a specific genre-cage. Up till now the duo has been experimenting with dream folk in their first full-length ‘She Owl’ (2013), then with psychedelic tribal anthems in the following record ‘Animal Eye’ (2015).
Described as “an emotional journey on David Lynch’s Lost Highway, with Bat for Lashes and P.J. Harvey on the front seats”, She Owl’s “Drifters Ep” gathers powerful soundscapes and haunting ballads with a dream-pop texture, sealed and delivered by Bay Area producer George S. Rosenthal.
The EP is a soundtrack for Jolanda’s surreal dream about war and deliverance. The music of She Owl gets more majestic and punchy at once, pouring out the duo’s nomadic soul, with adventurous vocals and instrumental harmonizations. The lyrics are a definitive statement about the times we’re in: if “the war within is the war outside”, we can face our fears and joys, and we can stop pretending we are not responsible.

exhibition & book launch
Molly Heady-Carroll is deeply interested in animals (reptiles in particular) and has dedicated herself to not only studying them through drawing, but also capturing their behaviour and personality through her work. Every week, Molly visits zoos, museums and farms to draw animals from life.
This exhibition showcases a selection of her animal art created over the past year. This show is also launching her new book Wekelijkse Dierentuin Tekeningen (Weekly Zoo Drawings).
When she isn’t drawing animals from life, Molly is inventing her own animals as a creature designer for games and animation. She currently lives in Bussum with her two leopard geckos, Spot & Dot, Poppy the tarantula, Laura the cat and (her favorite pet) Erik the boyfriend 😛

The Answers Inside Questions
“Why cannot Themis, the Goddess of Justice, feel safe with her Sword, her Blindfold and her Scale? Why is there blood on her Sword?
Does her Blindfold, the symbol of her neutrality, represent the indifference of today, or the addiction to Capitalism?
Can her Scale, the symbol of the fair distribution of justice, be sustained in the current global capitalist conditions?
Is she content that she has already lost her pedestal of the Goddess of Justice to the criminologist Lombroso, the inventor of innate criminal theory?
Does the belief of both Themis and Lombroso that the salvation of all humanity can only take place when the notion of Justice reaches the level of Social Justice, stem from truth or desperation?”
Bilgesu Erenus
Ah darling, we don’t need our reproductive organs to seed the world and be seeded”
With the Gezi protest as a background, Turkish playwright and activist Bilgesu Erenus tickles the audience with a theatre play of amazing universal interest.

This Ancient Greek comedy gives a portrait of the First Misanthrope.
In a turn of events, confronted with neighbours and the supernatural powers of the Nymphs, (who dwell in the sanctuary next-door) – this mean, troublesome man, (who hates literally all humanity), is forced to go through a well-deep, spiritual journey.

“Why have I returned? to clear my name!”
AstaroTheatro presents a monologue by Howard Zinn adapted and performed by Roberto Bacchilega
Karl Marx has had enough of seeing his revolutionary ideas taken over by opportunists who, time and again, organize a new priesthood and hierarchy complete with excommunications and indexes, inquisitions and firing squads. He is disgusted by media declaring him dead again and again. Karl Marx is back to remind us that his ideas are more alive than ever. He revisits memories of his courageous life and revolutionary theories. We learn about his family, his struggles and the boils on his arse.
Marx is Back is the opening of a themed evening with open discussion. ‘How far capitalism has gone, nowadays. Ideas for resistance and the meaning of revolution in our times.’

found each other in their love for the power of the words in performance.

In the first production of the Alli Mana theatre company, ten performers share their stories on stage.
In ”Alli Mana Pa K’ Eho” (I Do Not Have Another Mother) in contact with poetry, commemoration and the art of forgetting, ten people (compirsing actors and actresses, play writers, musicans and poets)
set a multi-language performance exploring and questioning the boundaries of time, the need of belonging, the beauty of sung and spoken words
– all inspired and driven by a common mission:
to build a bridge.

“Man resembles the place he lives in
Resembles its water, its soil

He resembles its sky in that his tears are blue
The sea in that his glances are rough
Houses, streets and corners
How much he resembles
And the dooryards
(His heart squeezed with a well curb)
And its words”

Migration has always been a human instinct.

THE PILLOW BOOK
photoblue

by V.V. (inspired by the author Sei Shōnagon) is a book of personal observations and thoughts, confessions, music, poetry around the life of two people’s past, present and future possibilities.

An artistic composition that intends to “play” with the opposites: love – hate | build – destroy | order – disorder | freedom – prison | joy – sadness…
A composition which will be based on a “game” of creating a composition on the spot, without preparation, using: bricks, cards, stones, knots => sounds, words, gestures, colors.

Idea, artistic approach, visuals: V. Koutrouli & V. Trikoupis @ AstaroTheatro,

I Corteggiatori – Amore a colpi di poesia
(AstaroTheatro in Italian)
03

Italian Theater Festival New York 2014”.

This performance brings the character of Gunther Braun to lead a meditative effort, somewhat burlesque and humorous at times, on questions around silence , space , time, the possibilities and limitations of language, the real and the unreal, the mysterious and the obvious. Will Silence, the only territory that cannot be mapped, remain unexplored ? isn’t the beauty of silence simply being ?

STATELESS – Shousha Refugee Camp (2012)
a film by Nunzio Gringeri and Mauro Mondello
562735_273048166137224_2115636762_n
February 15th, 2011. On the emotive waves of the tunisian and egyptian revolution hundreds of people take to the streets in Benghazi, in northeast Libya, to protest against the Muammar Gaddafi regime: this event began the struggle between Libya army loyal to Colonel Gaddafi and the rebel forces.
More than 30.000 people were killed during the 8 months civil war: the upheaval has caused a humanitarian emergency on the Tunisian border, where tens of thousands of foreign workers have fled. IOM, the International Organization for Migration estimates that 2.5 million migrant workers were in Libya before the crisis, a heavy footprint for a Libyan population of under seven million.
So begins the journey of Shousha refugees, men and women arrived at the border between Libya and Tunisia from the poorest countries in the world, escaping from poverty, war and ethnic persecution.
Shousha is an indefinite place. It is neither a village nor a city, you can’t find it on a map, you can not imagine that such forgotten place in the middle of the tunisian desert, just 9 km away from the Libyan border, hosts a tent city where thousands of people found refuge escaping from an unexpected war.
Since february 2011 up to now more than 600.000 people crossed the border between Libya and Tunisia, many of these people covered by walking, for days, the distance (130 kilometers) that separate Tripoli from the frontier post.
Today 4.000 people is still living in Shousha, persons coming from Darfur, from Eritrea, from Somalia, from Ethiopia, men and women forced to stay in the camp because their refugee status: they can’t come back in their home countries, because terrible wars are fought there, they can’t come back to Libya, they can’t stay in Tunisia. The only thing the can do is to continue resisting, waiting for the asylum application they sent to western countries, the only possibility to leave Shousha in legal way, to come back to a normal life.
Lampedusa in Berlin
a film by Mauro Mondello
Lampedusa_in_Berlin_no_text-724x1024(2)
In February 2013 the Italian government declares the end of the so-called “North Africa emergency”. Thousands of refugees are left alone, without jobs, food or housing. The government offers refugees 500 Euros and a special permit to travel through the Schengen area of Europe as an incentive to leave Italy. Many of them accept this sum and continue to live in Italy homeless. Some refugees move illegally to France. A few of them decide to reach Germany and then set up a protest camp in Berlin at Oranienplatz. Lampedusa in Berlin is the story of these human beings, struggling for their lives.

Ell Sol at AstaroTheatro

Ell Sol (Joan Mena) is a Catalan performer-singer-songwriter whose intense, groundbreaking performances push the boundaries of contemporary music with the soul and sensibility of an artist looking to connect in deeper ways with his audiences. With songs sung primarily in his native Catalan, his lyrics transcend language with penetrating melodies and a familiar but unconventional delivery.
After more that 150 shows around Europe and West Africa and sharing stage with such an artist as Zea (The Ex) Eric Boros (Vialka) Howie Reeve or King Ayisoba (number one in Ghana) ELL SOL presents his very new work PWALUGU in Astaro Theatro this February 2016. A musical tribal trip of tendencies, explorations and rituals into an intense and acoustic set of songs.

CONTENTS OF THE WORKSHOP:
The work investigates the nature of the stage as a condition of its determination and manifestation. Matter and time are the fundamentals.

It involves an exercise of the state of the body focused on the exhalation, to allow to develop a state of widespread occurrence, organic, non-hierarchical. Breathing and relaxation are the basis of internal awareness of the performative action.
The breathing technique is the foundation of the performative application and It determines it. The workshop is addressed to everybody.

EXHIBITION OPENING: 19:00
‘Albert Oink’ paintings by Zbigniew Maciak
Albert Oink is the pseudonym of Zbigniew Maciak, a Polish artist with a theatre background living in Amsterdam. His career started with drawing cartoons for a Polish theatrical weekly. He gradually switched from paper and ink to canvas and oil paint. For several years he portrayed mostly pigs and occasionally other animals. The hybrid forms presented in this exhibition mark a new stage in the development of his style which a Polish art critic described as “fallen aesthetics”

BOUFFON DOUBLE BILL: from 20:00
‘Feic’ by Ciara O’Sullivan
My piece involves a type of clowning called Bouffon. Bouffon is a way of attacking a social issue by being a clown and making fun of it. Feic is an Irish verb to see. We all see things, objects, people differently. The piece involves a box , a doll and a Bouffon who combines a mock Irish nun with an image of me. There will be audience interaction and strong language. Be prepared to look at things differently!

‘The Dictation of Life’ by Rhys McLellan
I have a problem with life at the minute. It’s a problem that seems to be worldwide, The Dictation of Life by the technology with which we surround ourselves. Be it a console, even something as simple as a car or these so called ‘android’ phones, they have an unshakable hold on us. They allow us to become more internally connected with each other but at the same time we are distancing ourselves, not just from each other but the world

THE LAND BETWEEN (Documentary Film): 20:00
THE LAND BETWEEN offers an insight into the hidden and desperate lives of Sub-Saharan African migrants living in the mountains of northern Morocco. For most, their dream is to enter Europe by jumping a highly-militarised barrier into Melilla, a Spanish enclave on the African continent. With unique and unprecedented access, this film intimately documents the everyday life of these migrants trapped in limbo, as well as the extreme violence and constant mistreatment they face from both the Moroccan and Spanish authorities. It also explores many universal questions; including how and why people are prepared to risk everything, including their life, to leave their country, their family and friends, in search of a new and better life

Roberto Bacchilega, Silvia Terribili & Grainne Delaney bring to life this piece of monkey business by American playwright David Ives: a dry satirical look at the meaning of human evolution, from the perspective of a chimp.

Karl Marx has had enough of seeing his revolution taken over by opportunists organizing each time a new priesthood and a new hierarchy, with excommunications and indexes, with inquisitions and firing squads. He is disgusted by media declaring him dead again and again. Karl Marx is back to remind us that his ideas are more alive than ever. He revisits memories of his courageous life and revolutionary theories. We learn about his family, his struggles and the boils on his arse.

Radical Friends (Feature Doc – 79min)
Questioning climate politics and exploring climate activism
By environment activst Chihiro Geuzebroek
Language: Spanish English (English subtitles)
Environmental roadmovie + grassroot movement = moviement of friendship! Radical friends focus is in raising people who dare to be friendly enough to contribute to a world where good life comes first and money&greed comes last.
REVIEWS: “Amongst all the documentaries dealing with environmental activism, director Chihiro Geuzebroek has hit upon a winning formula to detail something that’s so often rendered with the sledgehammer of didacticism. First of all, she’s the subject of the film, a personal journey undertaken by a cute, plucky “little Dutch girl” (of Bolivian heritage) which, frankly, goes a long way to rendering a picture that’s not merely palatable, but includes a wealth of information in an agreeable, entertaining fashion.” (Greg Klymkiw) REVIEW FILM CORNER [CANADA]
“Radical Friends could easily have been a self-indulgent work were it not for Geuzebroek’s extreme earnestness and deep respect for Bolivia’s culture and its activists. With the help of endearing animations and a relaxed interview style, the filmmaker has created a unique film that is both informative and emotional.” (Elena Lowe) REVIEW DORKSHELF [CANADA]

Spoken voice and written words (Theatre Workshop)
with Gabriella Sacco, Roberto Bacchilega and Silvia Terribili
The world has many sounds and the body has many voices.
How can we find the connection between what we receive from the outside and what we wish to express from the inside?
Our bodies explore the surrounding space scanning its potentialities.
Just like the body, our voice has memories too.
In this workshop we will share strategies and tricks to trigger our voice into exploring its depths, its peaks and routes of expression.
We will measure our renewed vocal strength against texts of our choice and match our expression to the texture of the written words.

El Sistema (saving lives)
A film by Yorgos Avgeropoulos (Small Planet Productions)
AstaroTheatro Sint Jansstraat 37 Amsterdam

One afternoon in 1975 in a garage in Caracas, Venezuela, the music professor and economist José Antonio Abreu began a crusade that seemed completely utopian. He wanted to save as many children as possible from poverty, the streets and criminality by teaching them free of charge classical music and making them members of a Classical symphony orchestra. Only 11 children came to the first rehearsal. But the seed has already been planted in the grounded, giving birth to what would later become known as El Sistema. An education system and at the same time a weapon against poverty. A tool for social change. An attempt to change the world through music. “Poverty is not only the lack of food and shelter. Poverty is to feel like you are nobody and to be deprived of an identity. It is abandonment and anonymity. Once a child receives its own instrument, it stops being poor. A child with a violin is not poor” “The culture for the poor cannot be a poor culture” Free entrance. Open debate after the film.

Cassandra’s Treasure (Golden Times)
A film by Yorgos Avgeropoulos (Small Planet Productions)
AstaroTheatro Sint Jansstraat 37 Amsterdam

The rights and the dignity of the people in Khalkidhiki, Greece, have been brutally suppressed by the riot police during their protest against the opening of a giant open sky gold and copper mine in the region. Huge interests, billions of Euros are playing a major role in this matter: foreign investments, exploitation, political interests, the workers and the local economy. All this happens with the ghost of the Greek economical crisis in the background. In the battle for precious minerals in Khalkidhiki the only sure loser is the environment.  Free entrance. Open debate after the film.
